In the morning of 22nd October 2019, two important guests were welcome to visit First Landing Education China Office. They were Ms Natalie Clerke, manager of institution of engineering and technology (hereinafter referred to as IET) Ministry of Education, head of Faraday Challenge, and Ms Meggie, head of IET China Office University Competition.
On behalf of IET, Ms Natalie and Ms Meggie delegated the right of host the “Faraday Challenge China” to the First Landing Education China office. We then hold an in-depth discussion about the co-operation of IET Faraday Challenge.
The IET is one of the world’s largest engineering institutions, with over 168,000 members in 150 countries. It is also the most multidisciplinary institution – to reflect the increasingly diverse nature of engineering in the 21st century. The IET is working to engineer a better world by inspiring, informing and influencing the members, engineers and technicians, and all those who are touched by, or touch, the work of engineers.
The annual IET Faraday Challenge is an engineering-based competition for schools where teams of six students, aged 12-13 years, compete against one another to see who can design, create and promote the best solution to a given challenge. All challenges are genuine, real-life engineering problems.
Each challenge day is designed for 36 students to take part with six teams of six students involved, there is also the opportunity to involve a team of teachers, but any more students would compromise the structure and intended outcomes of the day.
The competition not only trained the contestants' engineering thinking ability, improved the team cooperation, but also improved the contestants' creativity and problem-solving ability.
Vision of cooperation
China increases STEM education to boost innovation, public and schools are keen to engage high-quality education and learn advanced experience. We have always been committed to developing a dialogue platform for the exchange of education and culture between China and the UK. IET Faraday Challenge is an annual competition of STEM activity days involving 68 schools all over the UK. This competition has been successfully held for 10 years. We appreciate the British authorities for their support and recognition and believe the cooperation of “Faraday Challenge China” would promote China's STEM education to flourish.
We are still working on more details of Faraday Challenge China with IET. The two sides will follow the relevant requirements of the Chinese and British governments for the event and legally carry out this quality competition.
